Spread of Legionnaires disease tied to hospital and nursing home showers

A new government report published recently reveals a connection between water that comes from faucets and bathroom shower heads Legionnaires disease. This news sheds light on additional causes, as experts previously suspected the disease was solely caused by outdoor cooling towers.

Research and investigations have been made after a recent outbreak of the disease in New York City this summer that killed twelve people. Initially, officials thought the outbreak was due to cooling towers and fountains, but new reports have found the legionella bacteria in water from bathrooms and showers. The germ is able to infect victims through water vapor or mist that is inhaled into the lungs. Legionnaires disease is a potentially life threatening form of pneumonia that is most dangerous to elderly individuals with compromised or weakened immune systems.

According to the report, fourteen people died between 2011 and 2012 from Legionnaires linked to potable water. Most of these deaths occurred in hospitals and nursing homes.
