Study shows that majority of police officers from 2010-2014 were killed in auto accidents

A report released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund on Friday, July 29 analyzed the deaths of 684 police officers over a five-year period (from 2010 to 2014) and discovered that 272 police officers were killed in automobile accidents or were hit by a car.

Of 91 police officers who lost their lives while responding to a dispatcher’s call for service, many were responding to calls of domestic dispute.

When examining the 132 deaths of police officers who were either responding to dispatcher calls or were conducting their own self-investigation, one can learn that 129 of them died from wounds caused by guns.

The report was released at an optimum time, as it was “being finalized, the nation is reeling from the ambush shooting deaths of five Dallas, Texas police officers, followed days later by a similar attack on uniformed officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in which three officers were killed”.
