Nursing home ordered to pay $30 million in damages after resident’s death

A Memphis nursing home has been ordered by a jury to pay $30 million to the family of a woman whose death was determined to be the result of negligence.

Martha Jane Price was in her early 80s at the time of her death in 2009, and was sharing a room with her husband at Allenbrooke Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC. Price developed pressure sores on her foot that went to the bone, eventually becoming infected with fecal bugs. The problem became so severe that that her leg required amputation. Price died in November of 2009, two months after her leg was amputated.

The case was filed in 2010, and culminated a five-week trial where a jury found the nursing home liable for negligence and in violation of the Tennessee Adult Protection Act.
