Pedestrian killed after being struck by two vehicles

A pedestrian was killed along Maynardville Pike in North Cox County in Tennessee on Tuesday, December 1, after being struck by two vehicles. The man was in the southbound lanes of the highway when a Chevrolet pickup truck swerved to miss him. The next vehicle, a Ford F-150 truck, was unable to avoid the collision and struck the man at around 5:55 in the evening. While lying in the street, the pedestrian was then hit again by a Tennessee Highway Patrol Cruiser driven by trooper Adam Bowman while the officer was on his way to a crash scene on Interstate 40.

It is unknown how much time passed between the first and second impact. The body of the victim was transported to the Regional Forensic Center where the autopsy identified the man as 64-year-old Charles Matthews. The scene shut down the highway until 10:00 p.m. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident and no charges have been made. No other injuries were reported.
