Students sue NCAA about concussions and safety issues

University of Michigan student Steve Strinko, Ohio State University student Raymond Griffin, Duke University student Derrick Lee, and University of Tennessee student Orenthal James Owens are seeking damages in a class action lawsuit filed on Wednesday, June 8 against the National College Athletic Association (NCAA).

The suit also brings charges against three college athletic conferences – the Big Ten Conference, Southeastern Conference, and the Atlantic Coast Conference – claiming they have not established necessary safeguards to protect football players from concussions. A similar case, which holds a $75 million proposed settlement, is pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The Illinois case focuses more on medical monitoring and safety protocols than personal injury and includes a variety of sports aside from football.
