The Federal Railroad Administration laid out plans on June 9 to improve safety on railways and rail curves in light of the recent derailment of an Amtrak train at Frankford Junction in Philadelphia, philly.com reported on June 11.
In its recommendation, the agency advised that railroads should mark locations where the speed limit drops significantly, by more than 20 miles per hour, near a curve or bridge. Additionally, the FRA said areas like this should have automatic brakes to slow the trains if an engineer fails to. Barring this technology, a second crew member must be present to keep constant communication with the engineer.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has already employed the services of Jacksonville, Florida-based consulting firm Xorail to address concerns with the railroad’s curves and recommend action.
