Attorney claims GM and outside law firm coordinated to cover up defect
An attorney is claiming that automaker General Motors Co. gained outside advice from a law firm regarding the cover-up of the defective ignition switches in the company’s vehicles, with the legal firm allegedly advising GM to settle wrongful death cases that a jury would clearly find them responsible for, the Wall Street Journal reported on June 11.
Citing previous court cases, the attorney said that secrecy between lawyers and clients should not go as far as providing for or asking advice regarding the commission of a crime or fraud.
Around 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles, along with other small cars, were recalled in early 2014 due to these vehicles’ defective ignition switches.
