Bicycle lanes to close on Riverside Drive
The experiment with bike and pedestrian lanes on Riverside Drive in Memphis is over, according to the Commercial Appeal on April 1, and the iconic road will revert back to four traffic lanes.
The creation of bicycle lanes was introduced by an urban planner commissioned by the city, but residents complained of increased traffic congestion. Moreover, reports indicated that car accidents on the road actually increased. Although the bike lanes were created to open access to the riverfront, only around 19 bicyclists a day used the road compared to 14,000 motor vehicles.
Mayor A C Wharton said the boulevard would return to its original configuration until a new plan is developed that will suit motorists as well as provide protection for pedestrians and bicyclists.
