Fiat Chrysler issues recall of 1.7 million Ram trucks

In an announcement made on Thursday, Sept. 10, Fiat Chrysler issued a recall of over 1.7 million trucks due to steering wheel and airbag issues.

The majority of the recall, 1.3 million vehicles to be exact, is comprised of Ram models 1500, 2500, and 3500 built between 2012 and 2014. It appears that these trucks have faulty wiring in the steering wheel that could cause the driver airbag to deploy. Two injuries have been reported in connection to this issue so far.

Another 200,000 Ram trucks are included in the recall so that owners will have a part that could, according to the announcement, “lead to diminished steering response” replaced; this issue has led to one “minor accident” that Fiat Chrysler knows about. The vehicles that need a replacement part include the 2013-2015 Ram 3500 and the 2014 Ram 2500. In Mexico, the 2014 1500 is also included in the recall.

Finally, 188,000 2014 to 2015 Ram 1500 Quad Cap pickup trucks are also included in the overall recall due to a noncompliance issue regarding the side airbag. The auto maker stated that these vehicles fail to meet federal requirements designed to “reduce the risk of rear occupant ejection during a rollover.” While no injuries have been reported in relation to this issue, Fiat Chrysler has asked owners to bring these vehicles in for a free repair.
